At times negative thoughts and emotions can crowd in on us, leaving us feeling isolated or worthless; where life holds little meaning and we believe that there is nothing we can do to change it. This might be triggered by:
But often it is none of these. We can just feel stuck, repeatedly doing things that we know deep inside are unhelpful, harmful or just downright damaging. This can leave us feeling depressed, deeply anxious or panicked; struggling to cope with everyday situations that are increasingly getting on top of us.
These are tell tale signs trying to tell us that something is wrong. Yet we are often reluctant to admit this, fearing that we might not being able to deal with whatever we are trying to deny to ourselves. This is when the insight, understanding and support of a trained, professional counsellor can be very helpful.
Counselling offers an opportunity to be open about what is troubling you, where you will be accepted and supported in a safe and confidential place. Where you can also expect to be challenged about things that you might otherwise wish to avoid or deny. Where you can begin to see yourself as you really are and feel comfortable about that. Where you can begin to practice better ways of doing things.
People often ask me how does counselling work?” My answer is that just ‘off-loading’ can be very helpful. But counselling is more than that. Talking to someone who is actively listening to you can bring a clarity and perspective that you would not otherwise get. We will all hold beliefs about ourselves and the world around us that that are both un-founded and very self-limiting. As these emerge and are challenged in counselling, we can find ourselves increasingly liberated from their unnecessary constraints.
